2021 YeBo Academic Programme Orientation

It has been a busy start to the year for the YearBeyond Academic Programme. 2020 brought with it many unexpected challenges and a lot of welcomed learning. The Academic Programme kicked off the year with two weeks of training for our Implementing Partners (IP’s) and their Mentors.

As we continue to grow and with programme sustainability front of mind, 2021 marks the first time we are moving towards a more decentralised training model. We have paid particular attention to training, role-modelling and equipping our Mentors with the skills to run our YeBoneer Skills Camps themselves.

YearBeyond Academic Programme IP and Mentor training at a glance

WEEK ONE:

18 – 22 January

Virtual onboarding and training for all new and existing IP’s and Mentors.

The training focused on the administrative aspects of the Academic Programme.

WEEK TWO:

1 – 5 February

In line with Covid guidelines, we were able to bring all our Mentors together for in-person training. The major focus of this week’s training were the technical aspects of the programme as well as further personal and professional development.

Facilitator Training:

25 – 26 February

This training was requested by our Mentors. The training focused solely on equipping our Mentors with facilitation techniques. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. We look forward to incorporating this into our regular Mentor training going forward.

Skills Camps:

1 – 24 March

The official onboarding and training of our 2021 YeBoneer cohort.

Using the training provided our Mentors are now equipped to run our YeBoneer Skills Camps themselves. It was a busy 10 days for our YeBoneers filled with lots of new learning. We trust that they are now fully equipped with the tools and resources to make significant and meaningful change to many of the province's underserved communities.

Carrie Mashek, Academic Programme Manager, with support from the YearBeyond office has worked tirelessly to develop and run effective and meaningful training sessions for both our Mentors and new YeBoneers. This marks the beginning of what we hope to be continued growth and success for the programme and the communities we serve.
