YearBeyond or YeBo is a partnership between the Western Cape Government and numerous NGOs aimed at improving educational outcomes and encouraging a culture of volunteerism.
The selection of schools is based on the schools interest, availability of resources, availability of volunteers and an assessment of the school management capacity.
Participating schools are required to sign a MOU which requires them to avail the school premises, library and computer lab and school security staff after normal school hours until 6pm daily.
Parents are required to give consent for their children to attend the programme. They are also encouraged to support their children in their learning journeys through parent meetings and on-going feedback to parents.
In 2020, the YearBeyond After School Programme will be expanding its current footprint. The programme offers grade 2 - 4 learners literacy and numeracy support after school while providing youth volunteer tutors a structured 10-month youth-in-service programme. The youth are available to assist in-school in the classroom with paired reading, shared reading and group work in addition to running the after school programme.
As part of the Western Cape Youth-in-Service Programme, the After School Programme Office, in partnership with Community Chest, is calling on schools to apply as a new site for the YearBeyond Primary school academic support programme. "The YearBeyond programme has made a huge difference in the school. In just 6 months the teachers have seen a growing confidence in the learners in maths, reading and writing. The programme with its use of tablets, educational games and the Lego club, makes learning fun. This has resulted in more learners wanting to be part of the programme and even more parents wanting to keep their children in the programme throughout the school holidays."
