Our volunteers deliver a blended model of learning, using small group facilitation, technology-assisted educational programming, and experience-based academic clubs to guide their learners through the curriculum.
Volunteers are assigned to one school for the year and they work with the same learners every day for the duration of the year.
Learners who choose to participate in the programme must attend 70% of all sessions, or they lose their place on the programme.
The primary school programme focus is on English literacy and numeracy in the foundation phase or Grades 1 - 4.
The face-to-face time is implemented with Shine's literacy model, designed to accommodate small numbers of learners in intimate reading groups. All of the Shine materials are bilingual, which helps Xhosa and Afrikaans learners engage with English in the context of their own language. This is supplemented with a technology assisted learning programme. This includes a computer-based phonetic spelling and vocabulary programme called Reading Eggs, supported by the Click Foundation.
The numeracy support consists of a face to face programme for grades 1 - 3 called number sense and an online programme for the Grade 4 cohort. For this we have partnered with Greenshoots, who offer an online mathematics homework programme called maths@home.
The high school programme works with Grades 8 - 10 and offers a combination of homework support and literacy and numeracy.
Again, the focus of the programme is on English and Mathematics. IkamvaYouth trains and supports volunteers to facilitate a peer-to-peer homework support programme. This is complimented by two computer-based programmes: Fundza and Olico. Fundza is an English comprehension programme that aims to inspire a life-long love of reading. Olico is an online mathematics programme that begins with the foundations of mathematics: addition, subtraction, negative numbers, fractions etc.
Learners move through the foundations that they know very quickly, and depending on their answers, are channelled into the areas of mathematics that they need to better understand and practice more.
